Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is one of the most important numbers in university. It shows your academic performance and is used for scholarships, academic standing, internships, and graduation requirements.

Many Ethiopian university students, especially freshmen, struggle to understand how GPA is calculated. This guide explains the Ethiopian university grading system and how to calculate your GPA step by step.

The Ethiopian University Grading System

Most Ethiopian universities use a 4.0 GPA scale. Each course grade is converted into a grade point based on your mark.

How to Calculate Your GPA

Your GPA is calculated using your grade points and credit hours.

The formula is:

GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Step 1: Convert Your Marks into Grade Points

First, convert every course mark into its GPA value using the grading table above.

Example:

  • Programming: 88 marks → A → 4.00 GPA
  • Mathematics: 82 marks → A− → 3.75 GPA
  • Physics: 73 marks → B → 3.00 GPA

Step 2: Multiply GPA by Credit Hours

Each course has a different number of credit hours. Multiply your grade point by the course credit hour.

CourseCredit HourGradeGPAQuality Point
Programming3A4.0012.00
Mathematics3A−3.7511.25
Physics2B3.006.00

Step 3: Add Everything Together

Total Quality Points:

12.00 + 11.25 + 6.00 = 29.25

Total Credit Hours:

3 + 3 + 2 = 8 credits

Step 4: Calculate Your GPA

GPA = 29.25 ÷ 8

Your GPA = 3.66

This means the student's semester GPA is 3.66 out of 4.00.

How to Calculate Cumulative GPA (CGPA)

Your cumulative GPA combines all semesters you have completed.

The formula is:

CGPA = Total Quality Points from all semesters ÷ Total Credit Hours from all semesters

For example:

  • Semester 1 GPA: 3.50 (20 credits)
  • Semester 2 GPA: 3.80 (22 credits)

You cannot simply average 3.50 and 3.80 because semesters may have different credit hours.
